, i wanted to bring in our white house correspondent, dan lothian. dan, is it all about the timing? is it now or never? is it capitalizing on the emotion of this country or is there something else afoot? >> no i do think it is now or never. the white house sees a sense of urgency here in pushing something forward. when you look back over the past several years, when you had these massive shootings, whether it's in connecticut, whether it's in colorado or elsewhere, there's talk in washington about coming up with guidelines to prevent something like that from happening again. then usually it gets lost in the noise of washington there are other pressing issues that come up. in fact we probably would have been talking about fiscal issues had that shooting not happened. they see this as an opportunity to seize the moment. they believe the president is putting forward a comprehensive plan, but it's controversial. a lot of pushback, not only from gun rights groups but some lawmakers up on capitol hill. >>> if you wouldn't mind we minding viewers. there was a lot of talk about the 19 pote
to a fair share of security. protection for their kids and gun free zones for ours. >> it's a tough ad. dan lothian is at the white house. but i understand the president is fighting back with his own pr strategy because when he makes his big announcement he'll be surrounded by children who wrote letters to him begging for gun control. >> reporter: that's right. you know, we see the white house do this in the past, usually it's around a fiscal fight where the president's putting pressure on congress he'll be surrounded by families from across the country. well, in fact, the president, as you pointed out, will be surrounded by these young kids who wrote letters to the president in the wake of the connecticut shootings. in addition to that, though, a white house official confirming that the president will also be joined with some newtown families, families impacted by the newtown shootings at this event here today. so, clearly this is an effort by the white house to put pressure on lawmakers. as we've been pointing out, there are two tracks here that will take place, things that congress can d
violence. cnn white house correspondent dan lothian join us live now. dan. >> and the vice president ao met with the president today. they went other some proposals. the president saying that later in the week, he'll be outlining some specifics about watt administration needs to do. there will be no doubt, some resistance to what the president will be offering. but the president says that he is not worried about the politics. president obama says he's already reviewing the vice president's recommendations aimed at tackling gun violence. while some may require congressional approval. >> how we are gathering data, for example, on guns that fall into the hands of criminals. and how we track that more effectively. there may be some steps that we can take administratively as opposed to through legislation. >> reporter: strong resistance to executive orders from some gun right advocates who fear their second amendment rights might be put at risk. vice president biden, meeting with everyone from gun rights groups to the entertainment industry, sat down with house democrats on a task force put toge
